Whether you’re someone who makes a new year’s resolution or not, it’s always refreshing to implement some form of change when the new year rolls around. An easy way to do this is to switch up your furniture and home decor. In the design world, the new year is often filled with conversations about what’s in and out stylistically. Design experts at Studio McGee and Better Homes & Gardens , say that color schemes and decor trends are swinging back to traditionalism as we’re spending more time inside and long for a sense of comfort. Makes sense, right? If you’re ready to swap out your decor for something fresh and new, take a look at our top five decor trends for 2022.
Patterns & Textures
If you keep up with current trends, then you might remember how popular patterns and textures were last year. Well, they’re still on the rise for 2022! From wallpaper and bedding to window treatments and rugs , patterns are definitely showing up in both large and small-scale places. We can’t forget about texture! Cozy Sherpa pillows, minimalistic rattan furniture, macrame wall hangings, wood slat accent walls and any other textural element you have saved to your Pinterest board is definitely a top trend right now.
Warm Color Palettes
After being stuck inside for the last two years, many people have started leaning more towards earthier materials and color palettes. Dark hues of brown and warm natural woods are a good way to add a calming and inviting atmosphere for anyone who enters your home. Texas-based designer, Kim Armstrong even anticipates that we will see blush emerge as a popular neutral this year. Although these tones are typically associated with cooler months, it’s anticipated that they will have a year-round presence as everyone continues to create spaces of refuge at home.
Biophilic Elements
Being able to enjoy nature in all of its glory has been a little difficult the past few years, which may be why plants and other nature-inspired elements are gaining popularity this year. “Historically, being connected with nature has provided food, clothing, and shelter,” says North Carolina designer, Kristin Bartone . “These connections are imprinted in our brains, and we are subconsciously comforted by these colors, textures, and patterns." So, if you’re an avid plant parent or just love nature, this is your year to shine! In addition to the potted plants scattered around your home, take it a step further and try experimenting with plant-covered wallpaper, fun plant-hanging installations, and shades of green throughout your home. You could even try adding some eco-friendly design elements, too!
Organic Shapes
While clean lines were popular in years past, it looks like softer, curved lines are ready to take over. In Pinterest’s trend prediction report for 2022 , there were major increases in search results for curved walls and living room furniture. This traces back to our mutual desire for comfort during stressful situations - curved lines and rounded elements feel calmer than sharp angles and straight lines. But how do you add more organic elements to your home? Round mirrors are all the buzz right now. Try adding those to a space that needs a soft design element, like a bathroom or entryway. You can also try abstract pendant lighting. A simple curved pendant provides an interesting focal point and helps bring definition to any space.
Antique Pieces
Instead of purchasing brand new furniture for your home, try sprinkling in some antique pieces with your existing stuff. Not only are you being thrifty (we love when we can repurpose furniture), but you are also creating a juxtaposition between old and new pieces. In other words, adding antique decor to your current decor adds contrast and visual interest to your space. Plus, who doesn’t love a good thrift store find?!
It’s safe to say that the desire for comfort and stability seems to be the recurring theme for design choices this year – we all need a safe place we love coming home to. We hope that these design trends have inspired you to spruce up your home decor and try something new! Want to participate in these trends but don’t have the space to do so?
